Agenda

Focusing on the Chinese flag collection held by the National Maritime Museum (Greenwich, UK), this symposium engages scholars and curators from London, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Macau, and Hong Kong to examine the following subjects:

  1. the historical context against which these flags were acquired
  2. the Qing institutions and practices concerning naval ensign and imperial flag
  3. flags and symbols employed by local military organizations and sects
  4. military ensigns used during the Northern Expedition
  5. British Navy and the China Station in China in the 19th and early 20th centuries
  6. pirates along South China coast
  7. preservation and display of Chinese textile (silk, wool, and cotton)
